A construction firm has been handed RoSPA’s top Scottish safety award for its work on a new children’s hospital.

At a gala dinner in Glasgow last night, Multiplex Construction Europe Ltd – RHSC & DCN was named as the Scotland Trophy winner in this year’s RoSPA Health and Safety Awards, in recognition of the safety of its employees and others on its construction of the new Royal Hospital for Sick Children and Department of Clinical Neurosciences in Edinburgh.

The Scotland Trophy is awarded each year to the top RoSPA Awards entrant that is based or operating in Scotland, with the hospital project also being highly commended in the Construction Commercial Industry Sector of the awards scheme.

Julia Small, RoSPA’s head of qualifications, awards and events, said: “The awards assessors noted an excellent, all-round high-quality submission from the hospital project, which evidenced a well-developed safety management system that is implemented very effectively. Everyone at RoSPA would like to congratulate the team at Multiplex working on the project, in achieving one of our top awards.”

Multiplex specialises in undertaking the role of principal contractor on large complex construction projects, and has particular expertise in the construction of high-rise buildings and the health sector. The Royal Hospital for Sick Children and Department of Clinical Neurosciences project is being constructed on the site of an existing hospital in Edinburgh.

More than 200 organisations from across Scotland and further afield were presented with RoSPA awards at the Hilton Glasgow yesterday, celebrating their commitment to improving safety and health.

Running for 61 years, the awards programme, which is sponsored by NEBOSH (the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health), is the largest and longest-running occupational health and safety awards programme in the UK. It recognises organisations’ commitment to continuous improvement in the prevention of accidents and ill health at work, looking at entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement. While the majority of awards are non-competitive, competitive awards are presented in 20 industry sectors and for specialist areas of health and safety management. Other ceremonies in the RoSPA Awards 2017 took place in London in June and Birmingham in July.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

RoSPA: The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents

Accidents are the biggest threat to you and your family for most your life. In fact, more than 14,000 people die as a result of accidents across the UK each year, while thousands more are maimed and millions are injured. Businesses are ruined. Families are devastated. Children grow up without parents, parents without children.

Yet despite the scale and severity of the problem, accidents are still too often discussed with a shrug of the shoulders. There is a pervasive belief amongst some people that accidents are somehow inevitable. That they can’t be stopped.

Imagine if we took the same attitude towards child abuse. Or cancer.

For almost 100 years, RoSPA has been quietly working behind the scenes to change both legislation and attitudes surrounding accidents. From the compulsory wearing of seatbelts and the campaign to stop drink driving, to the Cycling Proficiency Test and to the more recent ban on handheld mobile phones behind the wheel, RoSPA has been instrumental in shaping our society for the better, preventing millions of deaths and serious injuries along the way.

As a registered charity, we are committed to continuing this legacy of change.
