Qatar installed six seismic sensors to better record information on earthquakes and aftershocks to protect citizens and industry.
A meteorology specialist from the Qatar government, Mohammed Jabir Almarri, reportedly said that the project was launched following Iran’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake in April 2013. In addition to killing more than 40 people in nearby Pakistan, the earthquake also caused tremors across the GCC.
A further 20 monitoring stations are in plans for next year, including some offshore stations. The data gathered is hoped to give a more in depth understanding of the region’s seismic activity, which could contribute to the refining of building standards in Qatar.
