Iranian nuclear activity is limited in exchange for lifting of international economic sanctions, in an historic deal with six world powers: France, Germany, Britain, the US, Russia and China.
The negotiations, which first began in 2006, have led to a deal between Iran and the six world powers that limits Iran’s sensitive nuclear activities to ensure that it cannot build a nuclear weapon. “Every pathway to a nuclear weapon is cut off,” said US President Barack Obama.
The US President’s enthusiasm for the deal, however, is not shared by everyone in the US Congress. While the United Nations Security Council and the European Union now back the deal, the US Congress has yet to give its approval.
US Congress now has 60 days to decide whether to approve or reject the deal. In the meantime, those in favour of the deal are keen to reinforce its benefits. Laurent Fabius, the French Foreign Minister, said: “It is a balanced deal that means Iran won't get an atomic bomb.”
